Andy Burnham’s plan for care, and questions that arise from it

This is a summary of our view of Andy Burnham’s proposals for health and social care. It isn’t authorised by him, or anyone else, so it may not be a fair representation of what he means.  We should start with the WHO definition of health . There should be better focus on prevention.Andy never really … Read more

Cameron’s Great Nhs Carve-Up

This is NHS Check report no 3 originally published by Labour’s Shadow Health Team in  October 2012

The Government’s Health and Social Care Act 2012 legislated for a market in the NHS.  In this report, Labour can reveal new evidence of accelerating privatisation across all areas of the NHS:

Community services

  • This week, contracts for 396 services across England (including diagnostic tests, podiatry and adult hearing) worth over a quarter of a billion pounds begin to be signed in the biggest act of privatisation ever seen in the NHS
  • Government ordered services to be put out – even though local commissioners had no plans
  • A further 39 services will be forced out in a major expansion of Any Qualified Provider tendering in community services

Annual report for 2012

2012 was busy, exciting,  frustrating and often difficult for the Socialist Health Association.  Our decision to re-engineer our website was largely implemented during the year, but it overlapped with the immensely prolonged campaign against the Health and Social Care Bill.  Our activity shifted away from the policy oriented conferences we had organised in the past … Read more

The researchers looked at hospital admissions and deaths in England between 2007 and 2009 for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. These were studied by age-group and sex. The research is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Andy Burnham’s talk to Tower Hamlets Labour Party

Andy Burnham

Clinton’s advisor said “It’s the economy stupid, but don’t forget healthcare.” NHS likely to be second issue in the next election. Not sure what will be left if two terms of Tories.

Wants Tower Hamlets to be beacon for what NHS could be:  Prevent postcode lotteries,  Restrictions on cataracts. Divergence from NICE guidelines. Restrictions on hips, bariatric surgery, varicose veins etc diverge from NICE guidelines.

Patients before profits. We let the market in too far in Healthcare. Bill takes this all much further, with already 3 areas in each PCT going out to Any Qualified Provider.  Now 39 services to go out to AQP. Whole Community Health Sservice going out in some areas.  So NHS First is a preferable new policy to replace Any Qualified Provider.

Our role would be severely restricted and handicapped if care for patients were … Read more

Can you improve our image?

The Socialist Health Association is concerned with promoting health and well-being through policy development and campaigns. Admittedly a bit of a mouthful. Many of the issues we tackle are abstract – inequality in health, mental wellbeing, democracy, public participation and engagement, marketisation and privatisation (this isn’t a comprehensive list – there are more to be … Read more
