Socialist Health Association has existed since 1930 – today we stand with socialist MPs on the picket line and in conference (picture Apsana Begum MP on a Unite hospital picket line)
Our History.
The SHA worked with unions to defend refugees fleeing fascism in the 1930s, worked with to TUC to send a team of health workers to republican Spain, campaigned to turn London underground stations into air – raid shelters in the Second World War. Organised mass meetings with MPs and unions to build support for a National Health Service in 1948.
Today the SHA stands by this record of supporting a publicly provided health service – we believe the current Labour government is failing in this responsibility. We jparticipate in marches, picket lines, in the council chamber, and in parliaments in Britain, Scotland and Wales. We back unionised workers in their fight against poverty pay, we support good quality council housing and nutrition. We speak out in support those fleeing war and oppression including the horrors of genocide.
Besides labour movement partners the SHA is proud to work with health campaigners in the SOSNHS umbrella group.
The SHA is a Socialist Society which, like many unions, is affiliated to Labour. We use our influence to back socialist motions to Labour conference and socialist candidates for public office – many of the candidates we back are also supported by affiliated unions.
